Song of the day – 196: The Cheapmunks

A female pop group from Pakistan covering ‘Say My Name’ by Destiny’s Child, mashed up with popular Indian movie song ‘O Humdum Suniyo Re’ by A.R. Rahman (the music director of Slumdog Millionaire), with some killer tabla backing. Most of The Cheapmunks’ music seems to be a fusion between Hindi and English pop songs. It’s more than fine by me. It’s superfine. Love those harmonies, and the obvious joy, and easy grace. Love love love the percussion.

Here’s another song, one that covers Usher.

I’m not entirely sure about their interview technique, but I love the music: “Well, we saw Alvin and the Chipmunks, and gained some inspiration from the singing squirrels. But we thought wait, we aren’t chipmunks, but we are kind of cheap, so let’s just call ourselves the Cheapmunks! It first started out as a random experiment on Facebook, but then the whole thing kind of became serious and we decided to stick with the name.”

They also cover The Cranberries’ ‘Zombie’… but, um…

Here’s the Facebook fan page.
