Brigette Herron’s 22-track summer mixtape for 2012
“Every day there’s a way to do it just right” says Sleigh Bells. “I know it’s hard but you have to deal with it.” I never really noticed how positive this song was. It’s message is Zen-like. “You’ll go away, but you’ll come back someday.” This combined with the extreme treble-heavy electronics and guitars makes this song a no-brainer for me. No brains, and turn up the treble please! Note to self: being a badass while doing your nails is a big theme this year.
Moving on. Gotta put my favorite Bastards Of Fate song on here. It’s ‘Police 9000’ from their recent album Who’s A Fuzzy Buddy? When I first saw Bastards Of Fate they were playing behind a rack of vintage clothing. Singer Doug Cheatwood was wrestling with a microphone, screaming into it and convulsing like it was an anaconda. He was like some fucked up mixture of James Chance and Tom Waits. I was awestruck. I was so distracted it took me a minute to notice how amazing the whole band was. They were like some crazy self-replicating organism, just moving in and out in complete unison. They were one living creature, and Doug was the giant eyeball staring into your very being—judging you, pitying you. At the end of the song Wellz (the bassist, or mouth of the creature if you will) leaned into his mic. He smiled, adjusted his wig and shouted “Hello, we’re the devil!” I think it was love at first sight.
Now this is how you get things done. Written and recorded in under 24 hours comes this killer song by Kate Nash. So don’t under-estimate your self or anyone else. Go record your own song tonight. I did.
I’m interested to see what Stealing Sheep will do next. I had mixed feelings about their mini-LP Noah & The Paper Moon, but this track ‘I Am The Rain’ is simply perfect with its beautiful harmonies and Velvet Underground inspired bitterness. I would love to hear more of this type of confidence and power from them in the future.
Trailer Trash Tracys album Ester is at the top of my list for 2012. Just beautiful. That is all, just listen.
