Often, it feels like I’m posting endless variations on a theme. Music criticism can serve as reinforcement, validation. The newest entry in this series is shamelessly ripped off from Mike Turner’s most recent Single of the Week.

Here’s what he said. It bears repeating.

I’ve been on a everything-but-indiepop bender for the last few months but this little 2-tracker 7″ from London England’s Cosines has the right pomp, the right stomp, the right chomp, and now I’m a chump for their charms. ’Hey Sailor Boy!’ the A-side (however being all nautical they call it the port side on the single) hits top marks with 60s thrift stall soul single swing matched with Elefant records Little Orchestra string section for extra oohs and ahhs topped off with a layer of sweet factory girl smoky Smokey vocals that can only come from years of alternating between hand-rolled cigs and m&m’s.

Something that was glorious about writing in print was the confines of space. No room for excess baggage or, if there was, then… you moved elsewhere. Here, everyone indulges and usually gives up trying. Why try, when there are no limits and you can have an identical conversation tomorrow? ‘Hey Sailor Boy!’ is as refreshing as bicycle practice. It’s cold in Brisbane right now (relatively speaking). I’ve been wearing my leather trousers to work every day for weeks. “You look,” remarked a fellow PhD student (female), “like you were in a super-cool and obscure band from the 80s and that you had a wonderful time, and now you couldn’t give a fuck what anyone thinks”. Man alive. I’ve been trying for that one, my entire life.

Cosines. You’ve heard and loved this song before. There’s absolutely no reason not to hear and love this song again.
