Song of the day – 124: Allo Darlin’

Don’t be put off by 1) the name, or 2) the beards, or 3) the cardigans.

This is twee pop par excellence. Oh, don’t be put off by 4) the use of the word ‘twee’ in these circumstances either. I too despise it with a vengeance, but sometimes it’s easier just to bow gracefully and acquiesce with the crowd. I didn’t even know this band existed 15 minutes ago, until I chanced across a link from my fellow Tumblr blogger Sophie. Now I have a crush on them like every other former owner of a Pastels badge. I note from the MySpace page that 5) my Brighton pal Monster Bobby features on one song, and 6) that Fortuna Pop! release their records, so I feel connected already. It’s all very Magnetic Fields (who I don’t like) and Mike Alway’s roster circa mid-90s (who I do like – a lot) and… well… you know. If you’re the type to shudder at a hair-slide and the thought of how cute kittens look when they’re rolling around chasing string then you probably really oughtn’t come close to this.

If, however, you dig Belle And Sebastian AND Ramones (and I’m assured that most of you kids do) then…

P.S. So now I know that 6) singer Elizabeth also plays in Tender Trap with my friends Amelia and Katrina (first media editor of Plan B Magazine), and 7) there’s a very strong Brisbane connection! Ah well.
