There’s something so seductive about Sleep Token.

A group of masked, anonymous musicians a lead singer called “Vessel”. The intrigue is enhanced by their lack of interviews – one back in 2017 is all I could find. A band “united in their worship of an ancient deity identified by them as “Sleep”, who appeared to “Vessel” in a dream”. Albums called Sundowning and This Place Will Become Your Tomb.

So far, so metal.

But then there’s Vessel’s vocals. They’re definitely not anywhere near what metal vocalists are supposed to sound like.

What’s fascinating about Sleep Token is how they’ve combined contemporary prog metal and modern electronic R&B.  It’s bombastic and symphonic but also delicate and graceful. Somewhere between James Blake and late 1990s Nu Metal, with all the crunchy guitars and pummeling drums. The production is astonishing, everything is so crisp, clean and crystal clear. They’re an audiophile’s dream band.

The band have started drip-feeding songs from their upcoming Take Me Back to Eden album, due out sometime this year. ‘Chokehold’ is the best of the four songs they’ve put out in recent days. The band are also touring Australia in April, definitely something to go and check out if you can get tickets.
