cassette tapes

by Jean Encoule

I stumbled across Terminal Escape a while back while out hunting for inspiration, and, in many ways, it’s the most useful new music tool of this or any other epoch. I have since spent countless hours downloading zip files of demos by eclectic (in every sense of the word) combos, such as Elektroduendes, Deskonocidos, Vaaska, Total War, Womb Raider, The Youth Avoiders, Unlearn, Crazy Spirit, and Dawn Of Humans, to name but 10 … duly following the yellow brick road all the way to their subsequent vinyl products.

On these journeys I have discovered other bands, new labels, hitherto unknown scenes, and millions of notes crammed together in the wrong order that sound like the most exciting things I’ve ever heard (part: 142782.7).

Here’s the official blurb:

“Terminal Escape is a home for cassettes. Terminal Escape is here to share music that was released on, or copied onto, cassette. Whenever possible, I have linked the posts to currently active labels and/or bands, and you are encouraged buy physical copies of the tapes you enjoy, as this blog is meant to support those bands and labels, not circumvent them. Likewise, if you have a legitimate claim to any of the music I’ve shared and would like it removed, I’m happy to do so. I am always looking for music, new or old, that has been languishing on cassette. However, I have little interest in collecting digital files, so please send me your tapes, not your mp3s. Feel free to contact me here: iamtheverybadman@gmail.com in regard to dead links, cassette collections you don’t want anymore, trading tapes (I am very slow), beard growth, beard care, beard management, or information you might have about any of the older, lesser known bands found on The Escape. Listen loudly, enjoy enthusiastically, comment frequently, and share with your friends. If you don’t have any friends, then you can probably find some in here. Also: comment frequently. Robert.”

Terminal Escape takes the C30/C60/C90/Go ethos of Bow Wow Wow to its 21st century outer-limits-conclusion. The souls of generations of tape traders are psychically willing this enterprise to continue its expansion at roughly the same speed as the rest of the universe. I’ve been on it like a car bonnet for months now, and I still haven’t scratched the surface.

You can help too. Get on it like a rash, and, like the man said, leave comments, sign up to follow, send cyber power to Robert’s elbow to empower him further. In the war on tedious, mass-produced, wallpaper stock, Terminal Escape is a weapon of choice. Spread the love, spread the link, spread the word, the bird is the word and the rest is a turd.
